The first New Zealand rugby team to tour overseas played New South Wales in 1884 where they won all 10 of their games. They wore dark blue jerseys and a golden fern leaf on the front. In 1905 this national side went to Great Britain wearing the black uniform and silver fern for the first time.
They became known as the All Blacks and roundly savaged their opponents at every chance winning 34 out of 35 games.
