![]() Kiwi country music veteran Noel Parlane once described Glen Moffatt as the future of New Zealand country music.
As shown on his second album release A Place To Play, putting Moffatt in
that box would not do justice to the talent that has seen his writing compared to Paul
Kelly and Neil Finn. In the trend-following New Zealand music industry, Moffatt has been
quietly achieving without the television and radio exposure (albeit meagre) afforded to
his commercial peers.
The new release has the potential to bring more accolades with its
13 self-written songs -- six are Moffatts alone while the others were co-written
with the likes of Ritchie Pickett and Arthur Baysting. It again features Moffatts
crack musical conglomerate Guns For Hire. If you wish to contact Glen Moffatt:
WHO IS GLEN MOFFATT? - They said it Take the Warratahs, inject 600 volts of energy, electrify their lyrics and you could be getting pretty close to describing Glen Moffatt. New Idea Moffatt has put himself into the premier league. You know hes playing aces because hes got them. Graham Reid, New Zealand Herald Moffatts earnest enthusiasm shows more passion than any Nashville hat act sizing himself up in the mirror, plus he has the songwriting skills. James Booker, Rip It Up His language is about New Zealand, about the land, the people and the history. Nevin Topp, Christchurch Press Its no accident that Glen Moffatts music, not to mention his down-to-earth approach to life, songwriting, performing, the whole shooting match really, has continued to snare the attention of the music media. Roger Moroney, Daily Telegraph GUNS FOR HIRE - The Band Jeremy Dart (electric guitar) A truly unique guitarist, Jeremys Fender Telecaster bites and growls provided Somewhere in New Zealand Tonight with its distinctive sound. He plays like no other. Maybe its the fact he hailed from late 1970s pseudo-punk band Rank and File, probably more known for the amount of food members could smuggle into their clothing than for any lasting musical legacy. Jeremy has been in the band for around five years after a long stint with The Waltons. Rob Galley (electric and acoustic guitars/backing vocals) Proficient in most musical styles, Robs acoustic and electric riffs and runs are the perfect foil for Jeremys playing. He also recently added backing vocals to his bow after a 1996 duo tour of the North Island with Glen. Rob has a long band history which kicked off for real with The Furys. Hes also served with Pat Urlich, Lorina Harding and The Ya Yas. Rob was in the band for a time in the early 1990s and has been back this time around for two years. Neil Hannan (bass guitar). Its probably easier to list the people Neil hasnt played with. His solid, driving style has featured with many New Zealand bands including Midge Marsdens Country Flyers, Coup DEtat and Hello Sailor. An accomplished session musician, Neil has also backed the likes of John Rowles, Renee Geyer and Randy Crawford. He also owns and operates Scoop de Loop recording studio in Auckland. Neil is the newest recruit, coming on board in 1998. Gordon Joll (drums) Gordon is one of the countrys most sought-after drummers. He has done much session work since really coming to the fore in the mid-1980s with Herbs. He played on Herbs Joe Walsh-produced Homegrown album and the subsequent New Zealand tour with Walsh. Since his days in that band, Gordon has recorded and toured with Hello Sailor as well as featuring on Somewhere in New Zealand Tonight. Gordon has been with the band four years. |
