Kiwi bluesman launches debut album January 2007
His well studied repertoire covers tunes from the great acoustic blues masters including Willie Dixon and Robert Johnson through to Doc Watson, Fred McDowell, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan and the Rev. Gary Davis. The album highlights Wilcox’ deftness and sensitivity on a range of acoustic guitars; his delivery not only honours the roots of the blues but brings a refreshing modern edge to the compositions. The studio reproduction captures all the tone and colour of an intimate performance. The album features three Steve E. Wilcox originals I Don’t Know What’s Going On, Where You Goin’ To Honey? and Baby Shine Your Light On Me which prove he is much more than an able copyist. Wilcox honed his craft over several decades, living and traveling in the UK, Spain, Greece and the US and saturating himself with traditional and contemporary music. He has been playing and writing since the mid-60s when he was influenced by a steady diet of early blues alongside the Stones and Clapton, which continue to shape his concert, bar and café performances. In the mid 1970’s Wilcox moved from his native New Zealand to London where he was further influenced by the punk and new wave acts of the time. Living in the Brixton area in the 1980’s opened up the world of Caribbean music, especially ska, reggae and soca. He joined the seminal London punk-ska band The Geeks and formed his own unit Kook City to perform original material. Returning to New Zealand in the 1990’s he began to write more evocative anthems as he further converged ska, reggae and Cajun influences with his love for the blues. It is acoustic blues and the messages in that music that shine through in his debut album which was recorded in two studios between 2004 and early 2006. In June 2006 Wilcox headed to the UK to work as part of the road crew for 60s icons The Zombies on a nationwide tour, where he also met with British media and distributors to discuss his forthcoming album and play a couple of intimate concerts. His first local performance of much of the new material was at the
Bay of Islands Jazz and Blues Festival in 2006. |
